Hi-vis workwear is one of those things that looks simple until you actually need to get it right.
A bright orange shirt from the bottom of the drawer? Maybe visible. A cheap vest that glows like a traffic cone under the warehouse lights? Possibly useful. But compliant hi-vis workwear has to do more than “look bright”. It needs the right colour, the right reflective materials, the right garment design and the right classification for the job.
When you’re kitting out a crew, that stuff matters. Not just for the paperwork. For the person walking across a busy yard at dawn. For the traffic controller standing beside moving vehicles. For the chippy, driver, labourer, rigger or site supervisor who needs to be seen before there’s a problem.
So, what makes hi-vis workwear compliant? Let’s break it down without turning this into a 400-page standards manual.

The first mistake is treating all hi-vis as the same; compliant hi-vis workwear is about matching the garment to the risk. A person working outdoors in daylight has different visibility needs to someone working at night under headlights. A warehouse worker has different needs again. A civil crew near traffic may need day/night garments with reflective tape, while someone on a bright outdoor site may only need a daytime-rated garment.
That’s why proper hi-vis gear is usually classified for conditions like daytime use, night-time use or day/night use. The garment has to suit the environment it’s being worn in. Otherwise, it may be bright, branded and freshly unpacked, but still not right for the task.
There’s a reason compliant hi-vis workwear usually comes in fluorescent yellow/lime, orange, or even fluorescent pink and blue. These colours are designed to stand out strongly against most worksites, roadsides, yards and outdoor backgrounds.
Not every loud colour counts as safety hi-vis, and while other coloured vests can be handy for visitor identification, events, marshals or role separation, they’re not usually suitable as compliant safety workwear for high-risk jobs.
That doesn’t mean they’re useless; it just means you need to know what they’re for. If the vest is being used to tell the first aid officer from the site supervisor at a community event, fine. If it’s being used beside moving plant or traffic, that’s a very different conversation. For actual safety use, stick with recognised hi-vis colours and check the garment classification before ordering.

Reflective tape is doing a job. It bounces light back towards the source, helping the wearer stand out in low light, at night, in poor weather or around headlights. On compliant hi-vis workwear, tape placement isn’t random. It’s designed so the human body can be recognised quickly, even from a distance (that’s why you’ll often see tape around the torso, over the shoulders, on sleeves or around legs, depending on the garment).
For night or day/night use, reflective tape becomes critical. A plain fluorescent shirt may stand out nicely at midday, then become far less useful after dark. If your crew works early starts, late finishes, night shifts, roadworks, rail, logistics or traffic-heavy sites, reflective tape isn’t a nice extra. It’s part of the safety system.
Compliance isn’t only about fabric… the whole garment matters. A compliant hi-vis garment needs enough visible material in the right areas. It also needs the right cut, layout and construction so the wearer can actually be seen while working. If the bright section is mostly hidden under a jacket, tool belt, harness or backpack, the visibility benefit drops fast.
That’s where layering can catch people out. A compliant hi-vis polo under a non-hi-vis hoodie isn’t doing much. A compliant vest over the top fixes the problem. Same goes for wet weather gear. If your crew throws on dark rain jackets every time the weather turns filthy, your hi-vis plan has a hole in it.
The outermost layer should be the visible layer. Simple rule… saves a lot of drama.

But branding needs to be done properly. A left chest logo is usually a tidy, reliable option. A back print can work well too, especially for traffic control, delivery crews, construction teams and supervisors who need to be identified from behind.
The trick is balance. Your logo should stand out, but the hi-vis still needs to do its main job. Safety first, brand second (good-looking gear can do both!).
A compliant garment that doesn’t fit properly is a pain. Too tight and it restricts movement; too loose and it can snag, flap around or become uncomfortable. Workers are more likely to wear PPE properly when it fits well and suits the job. Condition matters just as much. Hi-vis workwear cops sun, sweat, dirt, concrete dust, grease, rain, washing machines and general site punishment. Over time, colours fade. Tape cracks. Fabric thins. Once the garment is too worn to provide proper visibility, it’s time to replace it. A good rule of thumb: if the hi-vis no longer looks high-vis, it probably isn’t doing the job.

The easiest way to avoid guesswork is to check the product details, garment label or supplier information before ordering. Look for references to the relevant Australian or Australian/New Zealand standards, plus the garment’s intended use.
Then think practically. Is the crew working during the day, at night or both? Are they around vehicles? Will they need rainwear, jumpers or jackets over the top? Will the logo placement keep the reflective tape clear? Does the site have its own PPE rules?
